Biking and Wine Tour along the Delaware River |
![]() Cyclists of all ages have made the Delaware & Raritan Canal Towpath ride one of New Jersey’s favorite and most scenic riding tours. Whether you are captivated by history, a love of nature, or just looking for a wonderful day of great exercise, the D&R tour offers something for everyone. We’ll pass by 19th century mills and lockkeeper houses, stone-arched culverts, quaint little river towns, beautiful scenery, and an abundance of river wildlife as we ride along the former towpath that is a mere stone throw from the beautiful Delaware River. The towpath, designated as the Delaware & Raritan Canal State Park in 1974, is a 65+ mile long path that is constructed with a compacted surface providing a smooth, easy and pleasurable ride that is suitable for all abilities. Mountain bike and helmet rental is included as is our picnic lunch which we will stop to enjoy mid-way through our ride. The history of the D&R Canal dates back to 1830 when construction began and was completed 4 years later in 1834. The canal was dug almost entirely by hand tools using Irish immigrant labor. The main purpose of the canal was to create an inland waterway connecting the Delaware River to the Raritan Bay, thus allowing coal from northeastern Pennsylvania mines to be transported to the New York harbor and other industrial cities to the east. After our hike, we will make our way to a beautiful 'castle' vineyard and winery nestled on the banks of the Delaware River. The vineyard makes all the wines only from it's own 100% vinifera grapes. We will be treated to approximately 11 of their world class vintages all made on location - cabernet sauvignons, chardonnays, rieslings, pinot noirs... Before heading home, browse their unique art gallery - a collection of paintings, crystal, and sculpture from around the world on display for your enjoyment. All trip details and final trip itinerary will be e-mailed to all registered guests the week of the trip date. |
